NETFLIX

Picture
NETFLIX
MINIMUM AGE: 18 to create an account, parents can allow children to watch at any age.

WHAT IS IT?
Watch Netflix movies & TV shows online or stream right to your device.

WHAT WE SAY:
Safe, but discuss safety tips with children
.
  • Be cautious about content that can be seen on Netflix. As you will appreciate some series and films are created for adults. One series we would not encourage under 18's to watch is Squid Game. To find out more about this series and why it is not suitable read our article.
  • Netflix Party allows you to simultaneously watch with others, and you can also chat to each others using the written messaging feature. This service is for users aged 13+.
  • Netflix’s Terms of Use say that anyone under the age of 18 must only use the service while being supervised by an adult.
  • Always remind children to keep chat positive and friendly and to think about how someone might react or feel to something they say or post.
SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER:
  • To choose the types of TV shows and movies your children can watch, you can manage their profiles individually or create a profile with the Netflix Kids experience with titles just for kids.
  • You can decide what maturity ratings you want for your family by using Parental Controls that can locked by a pin.
  • If Netflix Party is being used, there is a chat function, so remind children and young people to think before they share things online.
  • Make sure that children and young people always use their device in a room whereby adults are present.
  • Discuss 'friends' - there is no such thing as an 'internet friend'. Encourage children and young people to only engage with other users whom adults know in the 'real-world', and that they know and trust.
  • Use protection settings, such as time limitations, or only allow social media usage with parental guidance.
  • Outline clear rules for your children. Pay attention to their development. As they get older, they should generally be given more freedom.
  • Communication will also become more important as children get older. Explain that you are not trying to control them but want to agree upon a set of ground rules.
  • Try to stay up-to-date on Internet trends and best practices.
  • Talk to your children about the risks of disclosing personal data.
  • Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report.
