WHAT IS IT?
BeReal is a social media app where users simultaneously post a photo of themselves and their surroundings. The time changes each day. Users get a notification to take an image, shot by their front and rear phone cameras. They can react to posts with comments and RealMojis, selfies of them displaying different emotions. Users need to post content in order to view other users submissions. This app encourages users to share their authentic self as it does not allow filtering and editing.

WHAT WE SAY:
Treat with caution.

  • When setting up an account users will be asked to set their account to 'private' or 'discovery'. Discovery mode sets the users account to public, and places their post each day to the 'discovery' newsfeed, which any user of the app worldwide can access, view, react and comment on.
  • 'Private' mode ensures users who aren't friends with with you in the app cannot view or comment on your posts.
  • Users must tap on the location icon before making a post to disable the app from displaying their exact location on a map. There is no way to permanently disable your location being shown, unless you turn off location tracking in your phone's settings.
  • On all account types, users cannot see your previous posts. They are only live for 24 hours, a bit like story posts on apps like Instagram, and Snapchat.
  • Users cannot be found unless their username is directly searched for, or a user sees a reaction or comment from them to a mutual friend.
SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER:
  • BeReal’s Terms of Use encourages users to report any content that is sexual or pornographic, or related to hate speech, extremism, violence, suicide or self-harm.
  • No parental controls. That doesn’t mean it is unsafe. However, if your child is under the age of 13, they may not understand the nature of the app and misuse it.
  • Pictures are unmoderated. Photos use the front and back camera.
  • It’s easy to connect with strangers. Some young people may send or receive friend requests from strangers through the Discovery tab if they are sharing with everyone. Once another user is on the ‘Friends’ list, they are able to comment on photos.  However, users can delete others from this list very easily.

  • Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report.
