YOUTUBE
MINIMUM AGE: 13+ (to create a channel)
WHAT IS IT? YouTube is a website and app where people can watch, share, upload and comment on videos. You can create your own YouTube account and even create your own channel. It also allows live streaming. WHAT WE SAY: Treat with caution. Download and share our poster. Inappropriate Content: Despite YouTube's efforts to filter content, children may still encounter inappropriate videos, especially those not specifically created for kids. Videos on trending topics, gaming, or music can sometimes contain explicit language or adult themes, which may not be suitable for younger viewers. Comments and Interactions: YouTube allows users to comment on videos, which can lead to negative interactions or bullying. While users can block or report comments, children might still be exposed to harmful messages. Live Streaming Risks: YouTube Live allows real-time broadcasting, which presents unique challenges. Content shared during live streams cannot be deleted once it has been viewed or recorded by others. Algorithmic Exposure: YouTube's algorithm suggests videos based on viewing history, which can sometimes lead children down a path of increasingly inappropriate content. Privacy Concerns: As with many social platforms, sharing personal information can be risky. YouTube collects data on user behavior, which raises privacy issues. |
GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS:
Set Privacy Controls - If your child has an account learn how to switch your child's account to a 'Private Account' by following YouTube's guidance on privacy settings. This limits who can see their posts and engage with them. Live Stream Safely: When streaming live, individuals may unintentionally reveal personal details, such as their location, family members, or private conversations. Unlike pre-recorded content, live streams are immediate and can lead to rapid and unedited sharing of sensitive information. Supervised Device Use - Ensure children use their devices in a common area where adults are present to monitor their online activity. Use protection settings, such as time limitations, or only allow social media usage with parental guidance. Open Conversations - Have ongoing discussions with your child about important online issues such as cyberbullying, grooming, exploitation (both sexual and criminal), body image, and accessing support. Make sure they know how to report any concerns. FURTHER SUPPORT: For parents/ carers If you're worried about your child or need support call NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000. If you discover criminal content when online then report it directly to the police or the Internet Watch Foundation.
