TIK TOK
MINIMUM AGE: 13+
WHAT IS IT? TikTok is a social media platform where users create, share, and discover short videos, usually set to music or audio clips. It includes a wide variety of content, from dance and lip-sync videos to comedy sketches and tutorials. The app features a "For You" feed, which uses an algorithm to suggest content based on user preferences. TikTok also supports live streaming and direct messaging. WHY IS IT AGED 13+? TikTok, like many social media platforms, contains a wide variety of content, some of which may not be suitable for younger users. By restricting the platform to users aged 13 and older, TikTok aims to reduce the chances of children being exposed to violent, sexual, or otherwise inappropriate content. WHAT WE SAY: Treat with caution. Access to Inappropriate Content - While TikTok has content moderation policies and age restrictions, young people can easily encounter inappropriate videos, including violence, profanity, sexual content, or drug use. Viral Challenges and Dangerous Trends - Some challenges that go viral on TikTok may be dangerous or encourage reckless behaviour, putting young people at risk. Direct Messaging - Even if your child’s profile is private, strangers can still reach out and initiate messaging. These messages can range from harmful or harassing in nature to making inappropriate or even illegal requests. Addiction and Time-Draining - TikTok’s endless scroll feature makes it easy to spend hours on the app, which can disrupt study time, sleep, or other responsibilities. Negative Impacts on Mental Wellbeing - The focus on views, likes, and viral fame can cause pressure to constantly post popular content, leading to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, or low self-esteem in young users. Influencer and Follower Culture - Like Instagram, TikTok has its own influencer ecosystem. Popular creators often portray idealised lifestyles, which can lead young people to develop unrealistic expectations about their appearance, success, or popularity. Data Privacy - TikTok has faced concerns over data privacy and how user data is stored and shared, raising questions about children’s online safety. |
SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER:
Set Privacy Controls - All teen accounts are now set to private by default, ensuring that only approved followers can view their content. If they already have an account learn how to switch your child's account to a 'Private Account' by following TikTok's guidance on privacy settings. This limits who can see their posts and engage with them. Family Pairing Mode - This feature allows parents to link their TikTok account to their teen’s, giving them control over content, screen time, and privacy settings, making it easier to manage their child’s online activity. Download Restrictions - Videos, created by users registered as 13-15, cannot be downloaded by others, adding an extra layer of privacy for younger users. Live Streaming Caution - Streaming live to an unknown audience can expose personal information. Teens registered as under 18 are no longer allowed to host LIVE streams, reducing exposure to potentially inappropriate audiences. Supervised Device Use - Ensure children use their devices in a common area where adults are present to monitor their online activity. Open Conversations - Have ongoing discussions with your child about important online issues such as cyberbullying, grooming, exploitation (both sexual and criminal), body image, and accessing support. Make sure they know how to report any concerns. FURTHER SUPPORT: For Parents/Carers - If you're concerned about your child or need advice, call the NSPCC helpline at 0808 800 5000.
