ROBLOX
MINIMUM AGE: 7+
WHAT IS IT? Roblox is an online game and app where you can create your own games or play games that other users have made. Roblox allows users to chat to other gamers. WHAT WE SAY: Treat with caution. Access to Inappropriate ContentAlthough Roblox has content filters, user-generated games can still expose children to violent, sexual, or otherwise unsuitable material. Parents should regularly review the games their child plays and enable parental controls. Direct Messaging Roblox allows direct communication through in-game chat. Players, especially younger ones, can easily be contacted by strangers by DM. Direct messaging opens up risks for sharing personal details that can be misused. Financial Risks Many games on Roblox include microtransactions for in-game items or advantages, leading to unexpected spending. Online Predators and Grooming Roblox’s popularity among children makes it a potential target for online predators. These individuals may use the platform’s chat features, private messaging, or even gameplay interactions to build trust and groom children. On Roblox predators might pose as other kids, using avatars or language that appeal to younger users. Scams Children can fall victim to scams, such as fake games or phishing links, which aim to steal personal information or Robux. Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is a significant concern on Roblox due to its interactive nature and social features. Players can communicate through chat, private messages, or voice (in certain games), which can sometimes lead to hurtful, threatening, or even illegal behaviour. |
SAFETY TIPS:
Ensure you take advantage of Roblox's parental controls, which offer valuable features to help manage your child's gaming experience. They provide an instructional video provided to learn how to set up these controls effectively. To prevent accidental or unauthorised spending, we strongly recommend not saving card details to the account. By doing so, you can ensure that your child does not spend money without your knowledge or permission. Scammers may attempt to lure players with free RoBucks, skins, or other in-game items. Always use official platforms for purchases and never click on suspicious links. Encourage players to be wary of messages from people asking for personal information or login details. Set time limits and balance screen time with other activities. Roblox has voice and text chat features that allow players to communicate, but they can also be a source of negative interactions. If young players are using chat, ensure they understand never to share personal information and report any concerns. Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report.
