MINIMUM AGE: 13+

WHAT IS IT?
Pinterest is a visual discovery and bookmarking platform where users can find and save (or “pin”) ideas for all kinds of interests and projects—like recipes, home decor, fashion, travel inspiration, workout routines, and more.

WHAT WE SAY:
Treat with caution
.

Inappropriate Content:
While Pinterest's content guidelines prohibit inappropriate content, reports suggest that it sometimes slips through the filters. This includes content related to suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Some searches can lead to images or links to websites with adult content. The platform allows nudity in certain contexts, such as in paintings and sculptures, and in science and historical contexts, but may limit its distribution.

Lack of Parental Controls:
Pinterest does not have strong parental controls or filters to block explicit content or prevent children from seeing it.

Messaging and Interactions:
Pinterest allows direct messaging (DM) between users, which opens up risks for inappropriate contact and predators.

Algorithms and Suggestions:
Pinterest's algorithms and suggestions can lead users down rabbit holes of potentially harmful content.

SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER:

Reporting Mechanisms:
If you come across unwanted photos of or information about you, you can report it to Pinterest.

Set Boundaries - Regularly review the content your child creates or interacts with and discuss safe sharing practices.

Educate About Privacy: Teach your child about the importance of privacy and the potential risks of sharing sensitive information online.

Help Centre - Pinterest has resources in its Help Center where users can get free, confidential and immediate support if they or someone they know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or is considering hurting themselves.

Open Conversations - Have ongoing discussions with your child about important online issues such as cyberbullying, grooming, exploitation (both sexual and criminal), body image, and accessing support. Make sure they know how to report any concerns.

FURTHER SUPPORT:
For parents/ carers If you're worried about your child or need support call NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000.

If you discover criminal content when online then report it directly to the police or the Internet Watch Foundation.

If you're worried about online grooming or sexual behaviour online then report directly to the police or contact CEOP.

For Children & young people
if they're worried or want to talk, encourage them to contact Childline Online or call 0800 1111.
