KIK
MINIMUM AGE: 13+

WHAT IS IT?
Kik is a anonymous messaging app. It lets you create your own username and message others without using your mobile number. Users can choose to chat one-to-one or in group chats. As well as send photos and videos to other users.

WHAT WE SAY:
Avoid.

  • New - Live Streaming. Use this link to watch our YouTube video explaining how it works and the risks.
  • The ‘Meet New People’ feature lets you start a conversation with random users – for this reason we wouldn’t recommend Kik for under 18s.
  • ‘Public Groups’ groups are designed to let you meet people with similar interests, but a lot them deal with adult or more mature subjects, such as sex, self-harm and suicide.
  • Not a safe app at all, and we recommend you keep children as far away from it as possible.
  • The option of anonymity means cyberbullying is common, and one of the most used apps for grooming children in the world.
SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER:
  • People are often completely anonymous - remind children of the dangers of talking anonymously to people.
  • It can be used for bullying / trolling - ask children to tell you if anything goes wrong.
  • Make sure they use their device in a room whereby adults at home are present.
  • Kik has specific guidance on how to report other users and how to block someone.
  • Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report.
