MINIMUM AGE: 18 +
WHAT IS IT? Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world action-adventure game set in the American Wild West, following Arthur Morgan, an outlaw, as he navigates gang life, survival, and personal dilemmas in 1899. WHAT WE SAY: Avoid. 🔞Exposure to Inappropriate Content Since Red Dead Redemption 2 is an online multiplayer game and features intense gunfights, brutal combat, and violent scenes, including the killing of humans and animals. Very strong language frequently appears in dialogue. 💸 In-Game Purchases Red Dead Redemption 2 does not have in-game purchases for the single-player campaign. However, Red Dead Online, the multiplayer mode, offers in-game purchases for cosmetic items, currency, and other content through microtransactions. Online play also allows players to purchase gold bars using 'real-world' money. 💬Direct Messaging and Chat Red Dead features direct messaging and chat. Players can communicate with each other through text chat, voice chat, and private messages while playing in the multiplayer mode. Since it's an open chat system, players may encounter inappropriate language, toxicity, or harassment. 🧑💻 Online Predators and Grooming Players can interact with others through voice and text chat, which may lead to inappropriate conversations or predatory behaviour. 📱 Cyberbullying and Harassment Some players may engage in aggressive or inappropriate behaviour, making the game less enjoyable or even unsafe for others. 🔓Scams & Account Theft Red Dead has had issues with scams, but they mostly happen outside the game through phishing attempts, fake giveaways, and account theft. 🚨Violence against Women & Girls There are moments where women are victims of physical abuse, kidnapping, or exploitation, often in the context of the lawless environment. Characters discuss sex frankly, and prostitutes can be found in towns. 🧠 Addiction & Mental Health The game’s immersive open world and multiplayer mode can lead to extended play sessions, which might affect sleep, mood, or focus if not balanced with other activities. 🎮 Game Concerns The large open world can sometimes have bugs or glitches that disrupt gameplay. Also, some missions can be intense or disturbing due to mature themes. 🔐 Privacy Concerns Players should be cautious with the personal information they share during multiplayer sessions or on linked social accounts, as this data could be targeted by malicious users. 📢 Lack of Moderation In Red Dead Online, chat and voice interactions are unmoderated, so players might encounter offensive language or inappropriate behavior. This can make the online experience unsafe or unpleasant, especially for younger players. |
🛡️SAFETY TIPS:
📲Understand the game Familiarise yourself with the games features and how they work. Knowing how the app works will help you guide your child effectively. 👨👧Parental supervision All the major platforms that run Red Dead Redemption offer parental controls to help manage access and gameplay. On PlayStation and Xbox, parents can block mature-rated games, set screen time limits, restrict in-game purchases, and control online communication like voice and text chat. For PC, while parental controls are less integrated, tools like Windows Family Safety allow parents to set time limits and block certain games based on age ratings. 💸Limit In-App Purchases You can set spending limits or disable in-app purchases on your device to avoid accidental or excessive spending. 🚨Avoid Unofficial Downloads Stick to downloading the game from official sources to avoid malware, data breaches, or compromised versions. 📢Underage Accounts This game might have an age restriction but it lacks a proper age verification process. Therefore, there’s little stopping users from faking their dates of birth or creating bogus profiles and targeting children and young people. 👥Manage friend requests Teach your child only to accept friend requests from people they know in real life. 📷 Cover the Webcam When Not in Use Physically cover your camera when you're not ready to go live. Always be mindful of what’s visible in your background—it can reveal location clues. 🧠 Trust Your Instincts If something feels uncomfortable, it is uncomfortable. Leave the chat immediately and don’t engage with users who seem suspicious, aggressive, or inappropriate. 🖥️ Place Devices in Shared Spaces Keep internet-connected devices in living rooms or kitchens, not bedrooms. This makes risky behaviour less likely and easier to notice. 🙋♀️Conversations: Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report. 🚨 Know the Signs of Trouble Watch for behaviour changes—like anxiety, secrecy, mood swings, or suddenly deleting apps. These can signal something inappropriate happened online. FURTHER SUPPORT: For parents/ carers If you're worried about your child or need support call NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000. If you discover criminal content when online then report it directly to the police or the Internet Watch Foundation. If you're worried about online grooming or sexual behaviour online then report directly to the police or contact CEOP. For Children & young people if they're worried or want to talk, encourage them to contact Childline Online or call 0800 1111.
