WHAT IS IT? Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale style videogame. This online multiplayer game uses a first-person shooter style, meaning the player experiences the game ‘through the eyes’ of their chosen character. Each game sees the player work alongside other players to take down opposing teams with weapons and unique character abilities. WHAT WE SAY? Treat with extreme caution. ✅ POSITIVE THEMES
⚠️ KEY CONCERNS 🔞Exposure to Inappropriate Content Since Apex Legends is an online multiplayer game, players may be exposed to offensive language, trash talk, or inappropriate behaviour from others. 🔐 Privacy Concerns Players should be cautious about sharing personal information in-game or on linked accounts, as with any online multiplayer game. 📱 Cyberbullying and Harassment In Apex Legends, cyberbullying includes verbal insults, targeted harassment, griefing teammates, and discrimination based on identity through voice or text chat. Repeated unwanted behavior like insults, threats, or targeting players to create a hostile gaming environment can result in harassment. 💸 In-Game Purchases Some skins or character designs may be revealing or suggestive, but they remain within the game's T-rated (Teen) or PEGI 16 rating standards. 💬 Direct Messaging & Chat Apex Legends has in-game chat and messaging features that can sometimes expose players to inappropriate content. Players can use voice chat to communicate with teammates. Since it's an open chat system, players may encounter inappropriate language, toxicity, or harassment. 🧑💻 Online Predators & Grooming While Apex Legends is less focused on social interaction, it still poses risks of online predators and grooming through its communication features. Predators may use private messaging, in-game chat, or fake profiles to build trust, often posing as peers or teammates. 📢 Lack of Moderation Apex Legends relies on player reports for moderation, which can sometimes result in delayed or inconsistent handling of toxic behaviour and inappropriate content. 🔓Scams & Account Theft Apex Legends has had issues with scams, but they mostly happen outside the game through phishing attempts, fake giveaways, and account theft. |
🛡️SAFETY TIPS:
📲Understand the platform: Familiarise yourself with the apps features and how they work. Knowing how the app works will help you guide your child effectively. 👨👧Parental supervision: Check their interactions and adjust privacy settings accordingly. Try to stay up-to-date on Internet trends and best practices. 📢Underage Accounts: Apex Legends might have an age restriction but it lacks a proper age verification process. Therefore, there’s little stopping users from faking their dates of birth or creating bogus profiles and targeting children and young people. 📷 Cover the Webcam When Not in Use Physically cover your camera when you're not ready to go live. Always be mindful of what’s visible in your background—it can reveal location clues. 🧠 Trust Your Instincts If something feels uncomfortable, it is uncomfortable. Leave the chat immediately and don’t engage with users who seem suspicious, aggressive, or inappropriate. 🖥️ Place Devices in Shared Spaces Keep internet-connected devices in living rooms or kitchens, not bedrooms. This makes risky behavior less likely and easier to notice. 🙋♀️Conversations: Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report. 🚨 Know the Signs of Trouble Watch for behaviour changes—like anxiety, secrecy, mood swings, or suddenly deleting apps.
