faq - How do I report concerns about online grooming or abuse?

If a child is being contacted inappropriately online or you suspect grooming, it’s essential to act quickly and responsibly. Parents, carers, and professionals should follow these steps:

  1. Use official reporting channels – In the UK, the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) service allows you to report online grooming, sexual abuse, or suspicious behaviour. CEOP investigates reports and can provide guidance to protect the child. https://www.ceop.police.uk/
  2. Report to the platform or app – Social media platforms, messaging apps, and online games have dedicated reporting tools. Block the user to prevent further contact and submit a report through the platform’s safety features.
  3. Contact local authorities or safeguarding teams – If the child is at immediate risk, contact local police or your organisation’s safeguarding lead. Professionals should follow organisational safeguarding policies and escalate cases promptly.
  4. Document and preserve evidence – Save messages, screenshots, and other relevant information. This helps authorities and safeguarding teams investigate and take appropriate action.
  5. Provide support and reassurance – Ensure the child feels safe and heard. For professionals, this includes providing a calm, confidential environment and connecting the child with additional support services if needed.

Key reminder: Early intervention is crucial. Using official reporting channels and following safeguarding procedures protects the child and helps prevent further harm.
