BlueSky
MINIMUM AGE: 13+ WHAT IS IT? Bluesky is the latest micro-blogging social media platform to get a real buzz. It has functionally similar to (and even shares the same co-founder as) X. BlueSky is for people who go online to stay up-to-date. News, jokes, gaming, art, hobbies. Short text posts make for a quick read. Users can follow other individuals to curate their own timeline and send users direct messages, much like on X. WHAT WE SAY: Treat with Caution. Lack of Content Moderation: Bluesky operates as a decentralised social media platform, which means users can create their own servers on which they can store data and set their own rules, instead of using servers owned by the company. Decentralised platforms can have inconsistent or minimal moderation, increasing the chance of harmful or offensive content remaining visible. Risk of Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Without strict controls, users (especially children) may come across violent, graphic, or explicit material. Direct Messaging - Strangers can reach out and initiate messaging. These messages can range from harmful or harassing in nature to making inappropriate or even illegal requests. Negative Impacts on Mental Wellbeing - The focus on views, likes, and viral fame can cause pressure to constantly post popular content, leading to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, or low self-esteem in young users. |
INFO TO CONSIDER:
Blocking Bluesky users can block one another, a feature that appeals to those seeking control over their interactions, especially compared to platforms where blocked users can still view posts. No algorithms here! Bluesky has no central algorithm feeding you posts based on some popularity contest. Instead, what you see comes from genuine engagement: posts gain visibility based on how many users like and "re-skeet" them (Bluesky's version of a retweet). Custom Feeds Bluesky lets users create and subscribe to custom feeds based on specific topics or interests, giving them control over their timelines. For example, users can follow feeds focused on science or posts from quieter mutuals, tailoring content to their preferences. If you're on mobile, you'll find Bluesky's official app on iPhone and Android, though there's no iPad version yet.
