REFACE
 - MINIMUM AGE: 13+

WHAT IS IT?
The Reface app is a popular mobile application that uses AI-powered face-swapping technology to let users superimpose their faces onto celebrities, movie scenes, GIFs, and more.

WHAT WE SAY:
Use with caution.

✅ Reface is highly engaging - users can see themselves in iconic movie clips, memes, or music videos, which makes it great for social sharing and laughs. It uses deep learning (GANs) to produce surprisingly realistic face swaps, especially considering it runs on a mobile device. New content is frequently added (clips, templates, effects), keeping the app fresh and engaging and the app is simple and easy to use.

🔐 Privacy Concerns
The app processes facial data, which is considered sensitive biometric information. While Reface claims to delete user photos, concerns remain about how data is stored, used, or potentially shared. This is considered to be a significant concern.

🔞 Exposure to Inappropriate ContentThere is a possible risk of coming into contact with inappropriate content. Some templates or celebrity scenes may contain suggestive or adult content. It’s generally not explicit, but not always family-friendly either.

🧠 Addiction & Mental Health
The big concern is body image distortion or self-esteem impacts from constantly altering one’s appearance.

 🚨Addictive Creativity
The app’s user-friendly interface, combined with a wealth of creative tools - such as filters, effects, transitions, and music - makes it incredibly engaging. For young people, this can result in spending extended hours perfecting their video edits, experimenting with new effects, or reworking their content to get the "perfect" result. This can sometimes lead to an over-investment of time, especially if they are caught in the excitement of the creative process.

💸 In-App Purchases
Reface operates on a freemium model, meaning there is a free version with limited features, while many of the more advanced or desirable tools - such as access to premium templates or ad-free usage - are locked behind a paid subscription. This subscription can be set to automatically renew, which may catch some users off guard if they’re not careful to monitor or cancel it in time.

📢 Lack of Advert Moderation
Reface's free version includes third-party ads that are not always well-moderated, with users reporting inappropriate or low-quality content.
🛡️SAFETY TIPS:

📲 Understand the app - Familiarise yourself with Reface AI’s features and how it works. The app allows users to upload photos and use AI to swap faces into videos, GIFs, and images. Understanding how these tools work can help you guide your child on safe and responsible use.

⚠️ Be aware of AI image manipulation - Reface uses artificial intelligence to alter photos and videos. Talk with your child about the risks of manipulating images of themselves or others, including privacy concerns and the importance of consent before using someone else’s image.

👨‍👧 Parental supervision - Be aware of how your child is using the app and what images they are uploading. Stay informed about new AI tools and online trends so you can support safe digital behaviour.

📢 Underage accounts - Reface may have age restrictions, but age verification is limited. This means younger users may still be able to create accounts even if the app is not intended for them.

🚫 Think before sharing photos - Remind children to be careful about the photos they upload. Images shared with AI apps may be stored or used by the service, so personal photos should be shared cautiously.

🧠 Trust your instincts - If something about an app, image, or online interaction feels uncomfortable or unsafe, encourage your child to stop using it and speak to a trusted adult.

🖥️ Use devices in shared spaces - Encourage children to use apps in common areas of the home rather than bedrooms, making it easier to supervise activity.

🙋‍♀️ Conversations - Talk regularly with children about online safety, including privacy, digital manipulation, bullying, body image, and how to report concerns online.

🚨 Know the signs of trouble - Watch for behaviour changes such as secrecy about apps, anxiety about photos or messages, mood swings, or suddenly deleting apps, as these could indicate negative online experiences.
