GROK

Picture
GROK
MINIMUM AGE: 13+

WHAT IS IT?Grok is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI and integrated into the social platform X (formerly Twitter). It allows users to ask questions, generate text and images, solve problems, write code, and access real-time information from the internet. Grok is designed to give more informal or “spicy” responses compared to some other AI chatbots, which can sometimes include humour, sarcasm, or controversial topics.
Parents should also be aware that Grok includes image-generation features that have been reported to be misused for creating manipulated or “nudified” images - where AI is used to alter photos of people to make them appear nude. This type of technology raises serious privacy, consent, and online safety concerns, particularly for young people. Because Grok can generate images and interact in a less restricted conversational style, it may expose users to mature content or misuse if not used responsibly.
WHAT WE SAY:
Use with caution.

🔞 Exposure to Inappropriate Content
Grok is known for being less filtered than other AI chatbots, and its responses can include adult humour, political bias, controversial opinions, or inappropriate language. It reflects the tone of the X platform, which can be sarcastic, provocative, or offensive — not suitable for children or teens.

🔐 Privacy Concerns
Reports suggest Grok AI may collect extensive device and network data—such as IP addresses, device IDs, and usage logs—which could be used to identify users. If data is transmitted without strong encryption, it may be vulnerable to interception or misuse.

📱 Cyberbullying & Harassment RisksBecause Grok is embedded in a platform (X) known for online abuse, trolling, and misinformation, a young user accessing Grok may be exposed to toxic discussions, harmful ideologies, or direct harassment if they begin engaging with controversial topics or communities.

🚨 Sexual or Adult Content
Grok may respond to adult-themed questions with sarcasm or humour rather than safeguards or educational explanations. There is a risk of it inadvertently encouraging or downplaying sexual content or inappropriate jokes that would be blocked by other AI systems.

🧑‍💻 Misinformation & Ideological Manipulation
Grok has been criticised for spreading biased political views, conspiracy theories, and sarcastic or misleading takes on serious topics. Teens looking for answers might take its tone at face value, without realising it’s meant to be humorous or intentionally controversial.

🚨 Indirect Links to Extremist or Harmful Content
Because Grok sits inside X, it may encourage interaction with public posts, trending topics, or hashtags that are harmful or extremist in nature. The AI might summarise or reference offensive material without warning.

🧠 Addiction & Mental Health
Like many AI chatbots, Grok AI can encourage prolonged use, especially among teens. Over-reliance on AI for emotional support or constant engagement may lead to excessive screen time or emotional dependency.

📢 Lack of Moderation
Grok AI’s growing popularity may attract bad actors. Users, particularly children, could be exposed to scam ads, phishing links, or inaccurate information due to inadequate moderation.

🔓 Scams & Account Theft
Threat actors may exploit Grok to craft highly convincing phishing campaigns or social engineering attacks. Bad actors can use vulnerable AI platforms to automate the development of malicious software.

✅ No real-time broadcasting
Grok does not share your live GPS location like a map app or social media check‑in. It won't reveal your exact whereabouts to other users

⚠️ But it can use location-based info
Grok can answer location-based queries like “what’s near me?”
🛡️SAFETY TIPS:

📲Understand the app -  Familiarise yourself with Grok's features and how they work. Knowing how the app works will help you guide your child effectively.

👨‍👧Parental supervision -  Check their interactions and adjust privacy settings accordingly. Try to stay up-to-date on Internet trends and best practices.

📢Underage Accounts - Grok might have an age restriction but it lacks a proper age verification process. Therefore, there’s little stopping users from faking their dates of birth or creating bogus profiles and targetting children and young people.

👥Manage friend requests - Teach your child only to accept friend requests from people they know in real life.

📷 Cover the Webcam When Not in Use - Physically cover your camera when you're not ready to go live. Always be mindful of what’s visible in your background—it can reveal location clues.

🧠 Trust Your Instincts - If something feels uncomfortable, it is uncomfortable. Leave the chat immediately and don’t engage with users who seem suspicious, aggressive, or inappropriate.

🖥️ Place Devices in Shared Spaces - Keep internet-connected devices in living rooms or kitchens, not bedrooms. This makes risky behavior less likely and easier to notice.

🙋‍♀️Conversations - Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report.

🚨 Know the Signs of Trouble - Watch for behaviour changes - like anxiety, secrecy, mood swings, or suddenly deleting apps. These can signal something inappropriate happened online.

💬Conversations - Have open discussions with children and young people about the topics associated with online use - bullying, grooming, sexual and criminal exploitation, body image, as well as accessing support and how to report.
